Main Imports

1) Industrial Supplies - 32.9%

About 1/3 of all imports into the United States fall into the industrial supplies category which includes crude oil which makes up 8.2% of the category and energy related products. By far the United States imports the most energy products from Canada and not the Middle East.

2) Consumer Goods - 31.8%

Not far behind industrial supplies are the imports that fall into the consumer goods category. Consumer goods includes automobiles, medicines, clothing, toys and really almost anything else that can be purchased at Wal-Mart.

3) Capital Goods - 30.4%

Imports that fall into the capital goods category rank 3rd but again not far behind the top two categories of industrial supplies and consumer goods. Capital goods includes office machines, motor vehicle parts, telecommunications parts like cell phones and iPad and iPod parts, computers and electrical power machinery.

4) Agricultural Products - 4.9%

Imports of agricultural products like fruits including bananas, wine, cheeses and fish are the 4th largest category of imports from other economies around the world into the United States but agricultural products lag well behind the top 3 categories of imports.

Main Trading Partners the United States Buys the Most Exports From

1) China - 15.4%

China is the number one exporter of goods and services to the United States largely because many goods can be made cheaper in China including the cost of transporting those goods to the United States. In no small part because China is the largest exporter of goods and services into the the largest economy on the planet the United States the Chinese economy was 3rd largest economy in the world in 2009 and in 2010 has surpassed Japan to become the 2nd largest economy in the world.

2) Canada - 11.6%

Canada is the 9th largest economy in the world and second largest exporter of trade to the United States. The US buys a great deal of its extra energy needs from Canada which has a huge abundance of natural energy resources.

3) Mexico - 9.1%

Due to its proximity to the worlds largest economy Mexico ranks as the 3rd largest exporter to the United States.

4) Japan - 4.9%

Japan is the 4th largest exporter of goods and services to the United States and was the 2nd largest economy in the world through 2009 but China surpassed Japan in 2010 as the 2nd largest economy in the world. Automobiles make up a large percentage of trade from Japan to the USA.

5) Germany - 3.7%

Germany is the 5th largest exporter to the United States and the 4th largest economy in the world and largest economy in Europe.
