United States Main Exports and Trade Partners

List of the main exports the United States produces and ships around the world and the economies that purchase the most exports from the USA. The largest export trade partners of the United States.

The United States exported roughly $1.1 trillion dollars worth of goods and services in 2009. Listed here are the main exports the United States ships to the rest of the world and the major trade partners who import the most goods and services from the United States.

Main Exports

1) Capital Goods - 49%

Almost half of all the goods the United States exports each year fall into the capital goods category. This category includes aircraft mainly made by the Boeing Company, aircraft and automobile parts, construction machinery like tractors made by Caterpillar, transistors, computers and telecommunications equipment.

2) Industrial Supplies - 26.8%

Industrial supplies like organic chemicals is the second largest category of exports the United States ships to other economies around the world.

3) Consumer Goods - 15%

The third largest category of goods the United States exports is made up of consumer goods like medicines including drugs and automobiles. Cars are purchased primarily by individuals so they are consumer goods while aircraft are primarily purchased by companies and countries so aircraft are capital goods.

4) Agricultural Products - 9.2%

Agricultural products like corn, wheat, soybeans, beef and fruit make up the 4th largest category of exports from the United States.

Main Trading Partners Who Buy United States Exports 

1) Canada - 13.2%

The main importer of United States goods and services by far is Canada which is the 9th largest economy in the World. Obviously location is the key here as trade goods do not have to travel far which keeps shipping costs low.

2) Mexico - 8.3%

The United States neighbor to the south Mexico is the 2nd largest importer of goods from the USA. Again like Canada location is key with Mexico as a trade partner.

3) China - 4.3%

The 3rd largest importer of goods from the United States is China which has one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. China is now the 3rd largest economy in the world and gaining fast on America's 4th largest trading partner.

4) Japan - 3.3%

Japan is the 4th largest importer of goods and services from the United States. Japan is the 2nd largest economy in the world well behind the United States which is the largest economy in the world but barely ahead of China which will surpass Japan in the very near future.
